Massive weapons cache seized from Slidell home

WWL's Bob Mitchell Reporting
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's officials say over $150,000 in weapons has been seized from a Slidell home.

Investigators say they learned of the massive weapons cache after a man called them to report over $70,000 in weapons was stolen from his home. That prompted authorities to secure a search warrant for the home, which turned up some 50 additional weapons, ranging from semi-automatic pistols to a .50 caliber semi-automatic bolt action sniper rifle.

"When the deputies responded to take the burglarly report, they became suspicious at how he was reporting the crime," said St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain. "As they began to investigate, they noticed the obvious, like the .50 caliber machine gun."

In addition to finding the weapons, investigators also found pictures of two young children posing with the guns. Investigators say the children, ages 1 and 9, lived at the home.

Another reason NOT to call the cops? Apparently now it's illegal to have a firearm collection?

<--------Still trying to figure out what exactly he did wrong? Last time I checked, having guns is a constitutional right. Around here, if you called the police to report that your stash was stolen, and they saw the .50 cal and whatever else, they would be talking all day with you about how cool your guns were, and then be on their merry way. A search warrant for the guns? Come on, that is plain stupid, and NOT illegal around here.

Must be a little more to the "story".

As I posted earlier, the man was trying an insurance scam. His guns were never stolen. He called the cops, reported them stolen & gave them a list of serial numbers. The cops wanted to examine the house to determine how the "crooks" got in & the man refused. The cops got suspicous, obtained a search warrent & discovered ALL of the guns on his "stolen" list hidden in his daughters bedroom. He also had at least one full auto wepon w/o a federal liscense for it.

I went by the gun shop this morning and took a couple shots.

Note: Two more in background on counter.

They are of course bolt action. Would love a semi-auto though, but the recoil would knock me into the next county.

Just what every Wyoming boy needs is a means to "reach out and touch someone".

This one didn't come out well but the box of shells near the rifle butt is visible.

Heck, for a thousand bux I might just get one, it's the cost of the ammo that'll kill ya. I do have a couple of nice rifle ranges to choose from after all.

Ka Boom!

Makes sense now. Didn't put the two together. Yes, he's an idiot!

Attempting to defraud an insurer....
Making a false police report......

I think the Semi-Auto 50 kicks less than the Bolt action.

The Barrel moves if I heard right and absorbs the energy to make it doable.

The Theft Reporting Man is a Dork and should get slapped around.

Guy's not a rocket scientist.

He could have at least moved the guns he claimed were stolen to another location before calling to report a false claim, then crowbarred the front door a little.

Hmmm.....

I joke.

The first keyword is Louisiana. The second keyword is cache. Someone reports $70,000 in weapons stolen, you can bet they have something the courts would be interested in. And you can bet the officer who thought up taking weapons "off the streets" got a big pat on the back, and maybe even a couple nice guns.

BTW, I'm a Louisiana native. This is the state which, until 15 years ago, had casino lobbyists handing checks to cooperative representatives on the State Legislature floor.
